Lapsit Storytime – Sounds All Around – Thursday, January 30, 2014

This week’s theme is Sounds All Around.  Sounds can be fascinating to babies, and it’s fun to watch them discover new sounds (and the items that make the sounds).  An easy way to introduce sound to your baby is to place different “noise makers” into a basket or box (just be sure they are babyproof!) and let your baby discover on his own.  Another great way to explore sounds with your baby is through animal sounds.  Read books about animals, or download the free Animal Sounds App from Fisher-Price.

Books this week:

Maisy Goes to the City (Lucy Cousins) – Babies love the bright illustrations and friendly characters.  In this story, Maisy and her friends discover the sights and sounds of the big city.

Clip Clop (Nicola Smee) – I just love this story!  Several animal friends get a ride from Mr. Horse.  This will remind you of how excited your baby gets after a horsey-ride from Mommy or Daddy.  Again!  Again!

Bounce Rhyme – Popcorn

Popcorn, popcorn sizzling in the pan.
Shake it up!  Shake it up!
Bam!  Bam!  Bam!

Popcorn, popcorn, now it’s getting hot.
Shake it up!  Shake it up!
Pop!  Pop!  Pop!

The babies will have an opportunity to explore the sensory bottles this week.  We will compare the bottles and learn which ones are loud, and which ones are quiet.  You can make your own sensory bottles to use at home – babies love them!

I have pinned quite a few new “sounds” activities on Pintrest.  One of my favorites is the Do-It-Yourself sound blocks made from recycled materials.
