This week my theme is snow, so I ask the children what they like about snow and what kinds of things they like to do in the snow.  I start out with a book that is one of my favorites called Snow Magic by Harriet Ziefert.   It’s about snowmen families getting ready to have a snow party to celebrate the first day of winter.

Next I do a flannelboard which is called Five Little Snowmen.

Five little snowmen sitting in a row

Five little snowmen all in a row

Each with a hat

And a big red bow.

Out came the sun

And it stayed all day,

And one of those snowmen melted away.

Four little snowmen all in a row….

Three little snowmen all in a row….

Two little snowmen all in a row…

(This one goes with the flannel board)The children enjoy telling me how to dress the different size snowmen with the different hats or bows.  Next we have a wiggle break with an activity A walk in the snow,  I ask the children what kind of winter clothing do we have to put on before we go out and play in the snow.  Examples- pull on snow pants, zip up coat, pull on boots, put on hats and gloves etc.  We settle down with our next book Bear Snores On by Karma Wilson.  This is a great read-aloud because the children like to repeat “but the bear snores on!”

The last book that I read is called Hello Snow by Hope Vestergaard.  This a great rhyming book about a young girl who puts on her winter clothes and ventures out in the snow for snowy day activites.

I end storytime with an activity called Shake your Flake.

Shake your flake high; Shake your flake low.
Shake your flake to and fro! etc

I pass out paper snowflakes to all the children so they can participate.  I close out storytime with a song also by Hap Palmer called Shout and Whisper, the children like to shout and whisper the lyrics to this song

Shout And Whisper
Words: Martha Cheney / Music: Martha Cheney and Hap Palmer

Shout and whisper just like me
Shout and whisper one, two, three
Shout! One, Two, Three
Whisper! One, Two Three

Shout and whisper, that’s what we do
Shout and whisper I love you
Shout! I Love You
Whisper! I Love You

Shout and whisper, that’s our game
Shout and whisper what’s your name
(Children say their own names)
Shout (Child’s Name)
Whisper (Child’s Name)
